In part one of this multi-part blog series, we went over some of the most important initial factors when considering cybersecurity within your smart home setup. More and more smart home features are connected to the internet, meaning security is important at all times to prevent data breaches and other risks.
At AVI Systems, we’re happy to help with all forms of cybersecurity and related needs for our home automation solutions, which include everything from 4K video solutions through home security, home audio, lighting and numerous other areas. What are some of the other important tips we offer our clients on maintaining cybersecurity in their system? Here are several.
Use the WPA2 Security Protocol
The best way to protect yourself from many basic security threats is by using WPA2 security protocol on all wireless networks in your home. This will encrypt all traffic between your router and other devices on the network like laptops, smartphones and tablets. It also protects against brute-force attacks which can be used to guess passwords over time until they get it right. WPA2 is an upgrade on WEP, which is much more vulnerable to being attacked.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Enabling two-factor authentication on your login to your home automation system can protect against would-be intruders. You can set up the login so that it asks for both a password and a special code that is sent to your phone. This means that even if someone does manage to guess or crack your password, they still need physical access to your phone in order to log into the system.
Keep an Eye on What You’re Sharing Online
Social media sites offer anyone with a connection the ability to follow what others are sharing, which can open up more avenues for threats. Be mindful of who you’re giving access to at any given time and avoid posting sensitive information in public areas where others may be able to find it and use it against you, particularly on any social media platforms bearing your name or picture.
Install Security Updates as Soon as They’re Available
The majority of smart home manufacturer’s offer regular security updates specifically for their devices, and it is important to apply them immediately upon being available. These patches are designed to address any potential vulnerabilities that may have been discovered since the last update was made available. It is recommended to connect your smart devices to a VPN for added security; our team can provide additional detail in this area if you need it.
