Installing a 4K Video Home Theater System

by AVI Systems

4k TV Technology

With the technology of 4K video, you can bring the true cinematic experience to your home theater system.

As much as high-definition technology revolutionized how we enjoy television and movies, 4K is truly a game changer. And, today, its affordable enough to incorporate into any residential A/V system.

What Is 4K Video?

The term “4K” is commonly used to describe ultra-high-definition (UHD) video resolution. Rendered using more than 8 million pixels on-screen, the crisp, clear picture is lifelike in its detail.

High-definition (HD) resolution, commonly known as 1080p, delivers on-screen pixels in a grid of 1920 x 1080. In this case, 1080p refers to the height of the grid, whereas 1920 refers to the width.

UHD renders 3840p x 2160p. So, while we could refer to UHD resolution as 2160p, much of the home theater industry has adopted 4K, referring to the almost 4,000-pixel width of the picture. By comparison, the “true 4K” cinema standard is only slightly better, at 4096p x 2160p.

The bottom line is that UHD screens display almost four times more pixels than HD resolution. And you won’t believe how that looks in your home.

Why Do You Need 4K Video in Your Home Theater System?

The rich, crisp picture of 2160p technology is more engaging and immersive, delivering images in unbelievable detail. The compatibility standards established for this technology increased color depth from 8-bits to 10-bits. So, while HD technology offers only 256 shade variations of the three primary colors (red, blue, yellow), UHD has 1,024 shades of each color. Lightness and darkness standards have also been improved, allowing for true blacks and whites.

The increased resolution also allows you to sit closer to the screen without seeing individual pixels. This means you can choose a larger screen for your home theater without needing extra distance for seating.

Currently, you can view 4K content from streaming providers like Netflix and Amazon and with Blu-ray content. Most gaming systems also cater to UHD. Even network television is getting in on the act and, soon, most programming will stream in UDH resolution.

Designing a 4K Video Home Theater System

As is true with virtually all aspects of residential A/V systems, the complexity of the technology can pose a challenge for DIYers. Unless you understand the many acronyms, standards, connection requirements, etc., you could end up with the wrong equipment and a system that’s too confusing to set up or operate.

Using the services of a professional home theater installer will ensure you get the system you want and the intuitive controls that make using your system a dream for even the worst technophobes.
